The San Damiano Crucifix

San Damiano, Assisi, the little church which Francis found in ruins. It was here that Francis is supposed to have heard the voice of Christ telling him to rebuild His Church. See Giotto's painting of this story.

Behind the outstretched arms is a black rectangle, the empty tomb with women approaching from both sides and angels conversing before.

In the upper portion Jesus ascends to heaven carrying a small cross, greeted by a choir of angels.

The very lowest portion is lost, but it pictured the last judgment.

To the left and right of Jesus are large and small people. The small ones, representing Roman soldiers on the left and the Jews on the right, are non-believers.

The large figures on the left are Mary the mother of Jesus and John the Apostle. Those on the right are Mary Magdalen, Mary the mother of James, and the Roman centurion.
