Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) -- American jouranlist
and short story writer. Served through Civil War. Contributed columns of
"Prattle" to San Francisco Examiner (1887-96). Disappeared into Mexico
(1913) on search for Pancho Villa and fate unknown.
Jack London (1876-1916) -- American writer, b. San
Francisco. Lived life of sailor, waterfront loafer and hobo (1891-94).
Became Socialist; made soap-boxc speeches; arrested. Spent year in high
school and a few months (1896-7) in U. of California. To Klondike and
back (1897-98). Produced 43 books and miscellaneous works. Served as war
correspondent in Vera Cruz (1914).
